Your idea is really cool, I like it, but it would require a -complete- redesign of EVE.
EVE is a successful and profitable MMO. You don't change the formula, you just tweak and rebalance, add some new shinies. A new system may be amazing, and it may fail, and no business is going to risk failing.
For instance:
The mechanics of scanning would have to be changed.
You'd have to be able to chase ships down IN WARP and catch them.
Cloaks as we know it would need to be removed and replaced with things which simply muddy the waters and make tracking a ship harder.
Etc, etc, etc.
It would be very cool, yes. Instead of "Hostile fleet incoming, everyone to the gate, drop a bubble" you'd have to predict their trajectory and set your own course to intercept. Combat would spread out over much larger distances than a current grid.
Space would be wide open. There ARE NO chokepoints in space, but there are things which are close. For instance, there aren't exactly a lot of paths between two solar systems. You know more or less where someone would land, and you'd respond accordingly.
This can absolutely work as game design, but it cannot work in the current mechanics of EVE, because 'in warp' means immunity. So, in EVE, they'd land in system.. then warp somewhere random and cloak, and you could not stop the invasion at all.
tl;dr:
This would make for a more fun, more immersive experience, but you'd have to COMPLETELY redesign EVE from the ground up. Ship stats, the way warp works, travel, the way scanners work, the way local works, the way combat works, the ranges on every weapon, the way the servers handle data, etc etc etc.
Basically, you'd have to make EVE seamless, without 'jumps' or 'warps' (you'd have a warp drive, but being in warp wouldn't mean you wait x seconds and then appear on another grid, you'd actually be flying).
This is never going to happen unless CCP decides to make another space-MMO from the ground up. EVE is a fun game, but not a very good space-sim, and I don't know if the majority of EVE's playerbase would even enjoy a more space-simmy game. So even if they could change it, it might be a bad business move.
EVE isn't so much about enjoying the freedom of space as it is griefing and trolling, I'm afraid. The 'space' side is boring so really, it's allt here is left to do... |
